Getting around & Practical Tips
Public Transportation
Durango has many Taxis, counterfeit taxis are a thing. Avoid any Taxi that says “Independiente”. The ones to use are light blue and with the Alianza decals such as in this image are safe.
UBER, Bolt and Alianza Go App are available in Durango, Uber is the normal classic Uber. Bolt is an app that is similar to Uber with vetted drivers and also includes some Taxi Drivers that sign up for the app. Alianza Go is an app that has only Alianza Taxi Union members, you can select a level of normal cab or an unmarked private black car. All three of these apps have the ability to pay via Card or Apple Pay through the App or with Cash directly with the driver.
ATMs
My recommendation is withdrawing Mexican Pesos from the ATM inside the Airport once in Durango, the fees are much less than any currency exchange place. The Bank with the cheapest fees and that I use is Banorte, with Santander being second and BBVA having the highest fees.
If you are a Citi bank customer, Banamex is owned by Citi, whatever that means.
Weather
Durango in late October enjoys pleasant fall weather. Expect sunny days with average highs around 75F and cooler evenings dipping to about 45F. Its generally dry this time of year, but we recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater for the evenings. Think warm days and crisp cool nights!
Tipping Culture
Tipping is appreciated and expected in Mexico, including Durango. Its customary to leave around 10-15% at restaurants if service is good. At more casual spots or food stalls, rounding up or leaving a few extra pesos is a nice gesture. For services like Taxis, hotel staff and tour guides small tips (10-50) pesos go a long way.
Basic Travel Tips
Currency
Mexican Peso, most places accept credit/debit cards such as VISA/Mastercard. American Express is less commonly accepted and Discover is not, who even has a discover card?
Language
Spanish is the official language, but many locals know some level of English as its taught in all levels of school.
Phone Service
Most US Carriers offer international roaming, but check your plan. T-Mobile works amazing with the TelCel network. Buying a local Sim card for extended stays is an option.
Photography
Photography is very common in Durango, I only caution against photographing any dual-cab tinted pickup trucks.
